 Lets take micromax as an example and design something for them
High volume sell can give much more profit . Obstacle for micromax is actually Vivo/Oppo in offline market . These brands are know for severe duopoly by paying too much profit to retailers .Partners like reliance digital and jio can help these Indian brands to stand out.

Japanese Display Industry is struggling for some time but their IPS LCD screen are ground breaking . Indian smartphone makers may tie up with them and Asahi for dragon tail glass. Taking stock of Snapdragon 429 & Snapdragon 632 will  decrease your SOC price . These two chipset can be easily for long term as under 10k segments .

Fighting with Chinese giants with aggressive marketing or aggressive pricing is very hard but Unique selling points cannot be beaten so Indian companies shall have some unique selling points!
Large amount of people are still in offline market . Beating vivo and oppo will be easy pancakes .
Beginning from entry level is essential as it will allow to gain back people's believe.
Problems with indigenous brand that they aren't aware of combining right features with right SoC .

First they have to contact somebody like Thundersoft then develop some apps . 
Stock android is quite mature so making heavy skin makes no sense anymore

Contact Almalence or Arcsoft
Audio : Arkamys /Maxx 

Strategy :
*Push Security update and bug fixes every 3 months
* Keep providing security patches for atleast 3 years
* atleast give one major os upgrade
*Keep updating your own apps like launcher for as many years as possible !
( Exactly what Sony does)
* Make sponsored apps uninstall possible.
*Enter some other Market from own website/Amazon or through carrier partners
*Make few but really good products
*Keep stock less so that inventory cost gets less
*Make accessories and earn extra profit once fan base is killer .
*Avoid Mediatek as much as possible as Indian Companies lack R&D to optimize AOSP where Qualcomm provide optimized AOSP Source .
